Reflection 9.12.18

09/12/2018

God hates visionary dreaming; it makes the dreamer proud and pretentious. The one who fashions a visionary ideal of community demands that it be realized by God, by others, and by oneself. They enter the community of Christians with demands, set up their own law, and judge the brethren and God accordingly…. This dreamer acts as the creator of the Christian community, as if their dream binds all together. When things do not go their way, the effort is called a failure.

Reflection 4.8.17

There remains an experience of incomparable value … to see the great events of world history from below; from the perspective of the outcast, the suspects, the maltreated, the powerless, the oppressed, the reviled — in short, from the perspective of those who suffer … to look with new eyes on matters great and small.

~Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Letters and Papers from Prison
