Reflection: Bread for the World conference

06/18/2010

Rockstarz in Residence Tim Gibbs Zehnder and Tom Zehnder were in Washington DC last weekend leading worship for the Hunger Justice Leaders Training conference put on by Bread for the World.  Our own Cindy Castro was there too as one of the trainees!  Tim shared these reflections on the experience.

The conference was an energizing gift! The caliber of folks there, (especially Cindy Castro!) gives me much hope for the future- for actually making a real difference for people trapped by poverty and hunger.

The response to our music was very encouraging; a huge validation was to have a Yoruban-speaking young woman respond with such enthusiasm to our version of “Ashe, Ashe”; and kudos to Immanuel’s Healing Center—we were asked to lead a “movement” prayer, and I borrowed heavily from what we’ve done at Immanuel, and of course coached by the ever-talented Rev. Gibbs Zehnder (love ya hon); the group responded with deep appreciation, very moving.

Thanks Ed, for your support of/consultation for the Taizé service; we had one participant say it was the “best Taizé service” she had been to—who knew Z-boys could be meditative?

In between moments, a high-def film crew from Bread recorded a couple songs live—have not seen the footage yet, but we’ll get that up on our site or youtube soon—keep you posted.

Can’t wait to be back at the home church!

The boyz in our nation's capital.
