Reflection 1.28.12

01/28/2012

From chaos and emptiness,
From loneliness and lifelessness,
Come, Creator, Come.

From darkness and shapelessness,
From the abyss and awfulness,
Come, Creator, Come.

From fearfulness and hopelessness,
From weakness and dreadfulness,
Come, Creator, Come.

~Celtic Prayer

Reflection 1.26.12

01/26/2012

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than
falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.
What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.

~Attributed to Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ

Reflection 1.13.12

01/13/2012

Oh God, grant us a sense of your timing.
In this season of short days and long nights,
of grey and white and cold,
teach us the lessons of beginnings;
that such waitings and endings may be the starting place,
a planting of seeds which bring to birth what is ready to be born–
something right and just and different,
a new song, a deeper relationship, a fuller love–
in the fullness of your time.

O God, grant us the sense of your timing.

Reflection for Baptism of Jesus 1.8.12

01/08/2012

… If I were to give a slide show of the next ten years, it would begin on the day I was baptized, one year after I got sober.  I called Reverend Noel at eight that morning and told him that I really didn’t think I was ready because I wasn’t good enough yet.  Also, I was insane.  My heart was good, but my insides had gone bad.  And he said, “You’re putting the cart before the horse.  So—honey?  Come on down.”  My family and all my closest friends came to church that day to watch as James dipped his hand into the font, bathed my forehead with cool water, and spoke the words of Langston Hughes:

Gather out of star-dust
Earth-dust,
Cloud-dust,
Storm-dust,
And splinters of hail,

One handful of dream-dust
Not for sale.

~Anne Lamott, from Traveling Mercies

Justice is like the Kingdom of God — it is not without us as a fact, it is within us as a great yearning.

Oración del campesino en lucha + Prayer of the Farm Workers’ Struggle

09/30/2011

Oración del Campesino en la Lucha

Enséñame el sufrimiento de los más desafortunados;
Así conoceré el dolor de mi pueblo.

Líbrame a orar por los demás;
Porque estás presente en cada persona.

Ayúdame a tomar responsabilidad de mi propia vida;
Sólo así seré libre al fin.

Concédeme valentía para servir al prójimo;
Porque en la entrega hay vida verdadera.

Concédeme honoradez y paciencia;
Para que yo pueda trabajar junto con otros trabajadores.

Alúmbranos con el canto y la celebración;
Para que levanten el Espíritu entre nosotros.

Que el Espíritu florezca y crezca;
Para que no nos cansemos entre la lucha.

Nos acordamos de los que han caído por la justicia;
Porque a nosotros han entregado la vida.

Ayúdanos a amar aún a los que nos odian;
Así podremos cambiar el mundo.

Escrito por César E. Chávez, Fundador de la UFW (1927-1993)

Prayer of the Farm Workers’ Struggle

Show me the suffering of the most miserable;
So I will know my people’s plight.

Free me to pray for others;
For you are present in every person.

Help me to take responsibility for my own life;
So that I can be free at last.

Grant me courage to serve others;
For in service there is true life.

Give me honesty and patience;
So that I can work with other workers.

Bring forth song and celebration;
So that the spirit will be alive among us.

Let the spirit flourish and grow;
So we will never tire of the struggle.

Let us remember those who have died for justice;
For they have given us life.

Help us love even those who hate us;
So we can change the world.

Tijuana Home Building Trip: 10.15.11

09/13/2011

A group of about 3-4 churches has been going to Tijuana for just over ten years.  We work through an organization called Project Mercy.  Project Mercy screens families according to need, and then groups like ours drive down and work with the family to build them a house.  We donate the materials and labor, and we get to spend a day working alongside the family.  We go twice a year, spring and fall, and it is always an adventure.  The next trip will be on Saturday, October 15.  Contact Richard Prince (mrprince2u@gmail.com) for more information or to sign up.
