Farewell from Matthias + Adios de Matías
08/23/2011¡Queridas Hermanas y hermanos de Immanuel!
Cuan rápido vuela el tiempo, no? Ya mi año de internado en Immanuel se acaba, con el domingo, 21 de agosto, siendo mi ultimo día.
Quiero expresar mi gratitud profunda a todos ustedes y la comunidad de Immanuel por este año. Ustedes siempre me dieron una bienvenida, y me han animado durante el año. Me han apoyado en la variedad de ministerios de Immanuel en cuales me dejaron participar. He visto a Dios presente aquí en Immanuel con frecuencia este año. Las cosas que aprendí sobre yo mismo, el ministerio, y Dios son de inmensa valor para mi, y me ayudaran con ministerio en el futuro.
Al principio de Septiembre regresaré a San Francisco para completar un año mas de clases del seminario. ¡De allí, quien sabe! Estaré escuchando por la llamada de Dios para seguirle.
Otra vez, muchísimas gracias a cada uno/a de Immanuel por compartir su ministerio con migo este año, y pueden estar asegurados de que visitaré cuando puedo.

Dear brothers and sisters of Immanuel!
How swiftly time flies! My year of internship with Immanuel draws to a close, with Sunday, August 21 as my last day.
I want to express to you all and the Immanuel community as a whole my profound gratitude for this year. You all welcomed me and encouraged me throughout the year. You have supported me in the wonderful variety of ministries of Immanuel in which you’ve let me participate. I have seen God at work often at Immanuel this year. The things I have learned about myself, ministry, and God are invaluable to me, and will shape my ministry in the future.
At the beginning of September, I will return to the San Francisco area to complete one more year of classes for my Master of Divinity degree. From there, who knows! I’ll have to listen for God’s calling and follow.
Again, thank you each and all for sharing your ministry with me this year, and please be assured that I will come back to visit whenever I can.

Virgie’s farewell + Adios de Virgie
06/06/2011Hello, friends, church-goers, Immanuelites, all!
Even though my internship has officially ended as of this month, I can’t really say goodbye; I believe I can speak for Brandon, also, in saying that you all are family now. So, sorry; you’re never really getting rid of us. We’ll be around.
Seriously, though, it has been absolutely a wonderful experience. I am so grateful for the support, encouragement, and welcoming hearts open to receive me during my time here. I feel I have learned and grown much; Immanuel is truly an inspiration for my future ministry.
To let you know what is in the future for me:
Graduation from Fuller Theological Seminary June 11 (a couple people asked about attending the ceremony–I don’t think you’d want to–with 520 graduates, it’s very long, boring, and impersonal–but if you would like to celebrate with me and other friends and family, there will be a special coffee hour reception at my home church, Wilshire Pres. [3rd and Western] following their 10:30am Sunday worship on June 19).
Also this month, I will be traveling to Israel/Palestine with a group from Fuller to study the ethics of peacemaking.
In August, I will take ordination exams, and assuming I pass them, and get the approval of presbytery, will then be able to seek a call as some kind of pastor.
Again, thank you all, Immanuel community, for journeying with me during this portion of my path to ordination!
¡Hola amigos/as, asiduos a la iglesia, Immanuelites, todos/as!
Aunque mi practica oficialmente se termino este mes, no me puedo despedir; creo que también puedo hablar por Brandon, en diciendo que todos ustedes son como parte de la familia. Así que perdón, pero nunca se libraran de nosotros. Continuaremos a estar presentes.
Seriamente, ha sido una maravillosa experiencia. Estoy tan agradecida por el apoyo, animo y los cordiales corazones abiertos a recibir me durante mi tiempo aquí. Siento que aprendí y crecí tanto; Immanuel es una gran inspiración por mi futuro ministerio.
Lo siguiente es lo que me espera en el futuro:
La graduación del Seminario Teológico Fuller será el 11 de junio (algunas personas me preguntaran acerca asistiendo la ceremonia – no creo que lo quieren hacer – con 520 graduados, es una larga, aburrida e impersonal ceremonia – pero si gustarían celebran con migo y otros amigos y familia, habrá una especial recepción de café en mi iglesia, la Iglesia Presbiteriana Immanuel (en las calles 3ra y Western) el 19 de junio después de su servicio de adoración de las 10:30 am.
Este mes también estaré viajando a Israel/Palestina con un grupo de Fuller para estudiar las éticas de las negociaciones de paz.
En agosto tomare los exámenes de ordinación y suponiendo que los paso, y recibo aprobación del presbiterio, entonces buscare una llamada como una pastora.
¡Otra vez, gracias a todos, la comunidad de Immanuel por estar con migo durante esta parte del viaje del camino hacia mi ordinación!

English Temporary Supply Announcement
03/25/2011We are pleased to announce that Rev. Dr. Chuck Robertson has been engaged as our English Temporary Supply starting April 1. Welcome, Chuck!
Chuck has served Christ in a great variety of settings— five years as a campus minister in the San Francisco Bay Area, another five years in overseas ministry in Poland, four years as pastor of a rural congregation and then four more years in a small town church in Indiana, fourteen years in an urban congregation in Michigan prior to coming to Wilshire Presbyterian Church in 1999. He retired from 42 years of active ministry in the fall of 2008. In addition to occasional preaching in retirement, for ten months he served as interim pulpit supply at Knox Presbyterian Church in Ladera Heights. This past summer he spent a month in Beijing, China, teaching Conversational English to graduate students at Peking University.
Chuck has a daughter, Michelle, son-in-law, David, and a delightful granddaughter, Olivia in Indiana, and a son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law, Kristin, in Tennessee. He is the second oldest of eleven children from a good Presbyterian family, born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and from age ten reared in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is a graduate of Indiana University (B.A., M.A.), San Francisco Theological Seminary (M.Div., Th.M.), and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (D.Min.).
Chuck ha servido Cristo en varios escenarios – cinco años como un ministro del campus en la área del San Francisco Bay, otros cinco años en un extranjero ministerio en Polonia, cuatro años como pastor de una congregación rural y después otros cuatro años en una iglesia de una pequeña ciudad en Indiana, catorce años en una congregación urbana en Michigan antes de venir a la Iglesia Presbiteriana Wilshire en 1999. Retiro de 42 años de activo ministerio en el otoño de 2008. Presbyterians in action: Virgie Pickering et al.
11/11/2010Congrats to Intern Virgie Pickering! She advanced to candidacy at Tuesday’s presbytery meeting. Immanuel was well represented – Elder David Mass hosted on behalf of SFTS, Elders William Baxa and Brian Symonds served as Immanuel’s commissioners, members Maria Rivas and Francisco Perez attended, along with Rev. Elizabeth Gibbs Zehnder and Rev. Catherine Hughes.
¡Felicitaciones a la interna Virgie Pickering! Fue avanzada a candidatura durante la última reunión del presbiterio. Immanuel fue bien representada – Anciano David Mass hospedado de parte del SFTS, Ancianos William Baxa y Brian Symonds sirvieron como los comisarios de Immanuel, Maria Rivas y Francisco Perez, miembros asistieron, junto con la Rev. Elizabeth Gibbs Zehnder y la Rev. Catherine Hughes.

Welcome USC! + ¡Bienvenidos a USC!
09/15/2010We are pleased to have 4 USC students working at Immanuel this year. They come to us through the Work Study program which provides tuition grants in exchange for working. This is a great benefit for the students and Immanuel.
Returning for his 3rd year is Uriel (Tito) Guadarrama, a senior from Santa Ana, Tito is majoring in international relations with an emphasis in global business. His interests are Sigma Delta Alpha fraternity and USC football. Tito is working in the Church Office assisting with printing Sunday programs.
Fortino Reyes is also a senior majoring in architecture. He’s a member of Sigma Delta Alpha fraternity. Fortino is working in the Church Office and is primarily responsible for preparing the PowerPoint for the Spanish service.
Luis Romero is a sophomore from LA majoring in fine arts. He is working in the Church Office and assisting with Sunday audio/visual. He is also a member of Sigma Delta Alpha fraternity.
Javier Soleto is a junior from Hemet majoring in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Major, Pre-Med with a minor in Economics. In August Javier traveled to Ecuador as a leader of a medical mission trip. He is working in the Church Office and the Food Pantry. He like to travel, play soccer, collect soccer jerseys, read a good book, and hang out with friends. He is a member of Sigma Delta Alpha fraternity.

Estamos contentos de tener 4 estudiantes de USC trabajando en Immanuel este año. Vienen a nosotros por medio del programa de Trabajo de Estudios, el cual proporciona fondos para la matriculación en cambio por trabajar. Esto es un gran beneficio por los estudiantes y Immanuel.
Regresando por su 3er año es Uriel (Tito) Guadarrama, en su ultimo año, de Santa Ana. Especializando en relaciones internacionales con un énfasis en negocios globales. Sus intereses son la fraternidad Sigma Delta Alpha y el futbol de USC. Tito esta trabajando en la Oficina de la Iglesia, ayudando con la impresión de los programas del domingo.
Fortino Reyes también esta en su ultimo año, especializando en arquitectura. Es un miembro de la fraternidad Sigma Delta Alpha. Fortino esta trabajando en la Iglesia de la Oficina y ante todo es responsable por la preparación del PowerPoint por el servicio en español.
Luis Romero esta en su segundo año, es de LA, y su especialización es artes. Esta trabajando en la Oficina de la Iglesia y ayudando con el audio/visual del domingo. También es un miembro de la fraternidad Sigma Delta Alpha.
Javier Soleto esta en su tercer año, de Hemet, especializando en Promoción de Salud y Prevención de Enfermedades, Pre-Med con un secundario en Economía. En agosto, Javier viajo a Ecuador como líder de un viaje de misión medica. Esta trabajando en la Oficina de la Iglesia y en la Despensa de Alimento. Le gusta viajar, jugar futbol, colectar camisetas de futbol, leer un bueno libro, y pasar el tiempo con amigos. Es un miembro de la fraternidad Sigma Delta Alpha.

New Intern: Introducing Virgie Pickering
08/26/2010Hi! I’m Virgie and here’s some info about me:
I grew up near L.A. City College, where I almost finished an A.A. (but did not want to take PE). I transferred to Whitworth University in Spokane, WA (where I had to take PE anyway) and graduated in 2005 with a B.A. in Theology. After college, I totaled my car on the freeway, took a job placating irate customers at a call center, got married, moved to Boston, worked at a group home for psychologically traumatized children, and then in 2008 moved back to L.A. to begin the M.Div. program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. Some random factoids: my hobbies include tree identification, painting, and creative writing (fiction, poetry, blogging). My husband (Brandon) is a credit counselor (feel free to approach him if you or someone you know has credit problems). My Spanish skills are unfortunately limited, but I would be delighted if you help me practice! I look forward to being part of the Immanuel community!

Crecí cerca del L.A. City College, donde casi termine un A.A. (pero no casi tomar Educación Física). Transferí a la Universidad Whitworth en Spokane, WA (donde de todos modos tuve que tomar Educación Física) y gradué en 2005 con un B.A. en Teología. Después del colegio, destruí mi carro en la autopista, tome un trabajo aplacando clientes irados en un centro de llamadas, me case, me traslade a Boston, trabajando en una institución de niños/as traumados psicológicamente, y después en 2008 me traslade a L.A. para comenzar el programa de M. Div. en el Seminario Teológico Fuller en Pasadena. Algunos anecdóticos aleatorio: mis pasatiempos incluyen la identificación de arboles, pintura, y escritura creativa (ficción, poesía, bloguear). Mi esposo (Brandon) es un consejero de crédito (no dudes en comunicarte con él si tu otros tienen problemas de crédito.) ¡Lamentablemente mis habilidades lingüísticas en español son limitadas, pero estaré encantado si me ayudaran a practicar! ¡Espero ser parte de la comunidad de Immanuel!

New Intern: Introducing Matthias Peterson-Brandt
08/16/2010Matthias Peterson-Brandt grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended a Spanish immersion elementary and middle school. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he studied Spanish and English. While in college, he was a chaplain’s assistant and began to feel a call to ministry. He spent a year as an Americorps volunteer in Chicago working with a homeless agency. Matthias has completed his first two years of seminary at San Francisco Theological Seminary in the Bay Area, and is looking forward to ministering with Immanuel.

Matthias Peterson-Brandt fue criado en Kansas City, Missouri y asistió una escuela primaria y secundaria de inmersión español. Asistió el Colegio Coe en Cedar Rapids, Iowa, donde estudio Español y Ingles. Mientras que estaba en el colegio, fue un asistente de un capellán y comenzó a sentir una llamada al ministerio. Paso un año como un voluntario de Americorps en Chicago, trabajando en una agencia para aquellos sin vivienda. Matthias completo sus primeros dos años de seminario en el Seminario Teológico de San Francisco en Bay Area, y esta esperando sirviendo en Immanuel.

Celebrando el ministerio de Frank en Immanuel + Celebrating Frank’s ministry at Immanuel 7.25.10

Únete con nosotros el domingo, 25 de julio de 2010 por el servicio, celebración y bendiciones mientras que recordamos los 15 anos de ministerio del Rev. Dr. Frank M. Alton en Immanuel.
Comenzaremos con el servicio a las 10:30 a.m., seguido por una breve reunión congregacional en el santuario a las 11:30 a.m., después nos iremos al Patio por almuerzo y compartiendo memorias y expresiones de gratitud. Todos son bienvenidos a traer cartas/regalos para enviar bendiciones a Frank.
A las 5:00 p.m. nos reuniremos en el santuario con la comunidad de Los Ángeles para recordar con historias y canciones el ministerio de Frank en la comunidad, seguido por refrescos en el Parlor.
Esperamos que pueda ser parte de este día especial en la vida de Immanuel.

Celebrating Frank’s Ministry at Immanuel
Join us Sunday, July 25, 2010 for worship, celebration & blessing as we remember the 15 years of Rev. Dr. Frank M. Alton’s ministry at Immanuel.
We’ll begin with worship at 10:30 a.m., followed by a brief congregational meeting in the sanctuary at 11:30 a.m., then we’ll adjourn to the Patio for lunch and sharing of memories and expressions of gratitude. Everyone is welcome to bring cards/gifts to send Frank on with blessings.
At 5:00 p.m. we’ll gather in the sanctuary with the larger Los Angeles community to remember with stories and songs Frank’s ministry in the community, followed by light refreshments in the Parlor.
We hope that you can be a part of this special day in the life of Immanuel.
