One LA Action: 1.30.11

01/26/2011

Sunday, January 30
3:00-5:00 pm
Temple Emanuel
8844 Burton Way
Beverly Hills 90211

On January 30th 2011, over 400 leaders from One LA congregations and institutions will gather at Temple Emanuel, Beverly Hills to present a community agenda for health care reform, to State Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, Assemblyman Mike Feuer, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and other invited guests.

Over the past several months, Rabbi Laura Geller and others from Temple Emanuel have begun working with Father Rosendo Urrabazo and other leaders from Our Lady Queen of Angeles Catholic Church in Downtown LA to address the challenges that their respective communities face in accessing quality, affordable health care.  These leaders are members of One LA – IAF, a broad-based organization of churches, synagogues, schools, unions and nonprofits. Together with other community institutions from South LA, Koreatown and the San Fernando Valley, they have conducted hundreds of house meetings and community conversations, as well as dozens of research meetings with CEOs, executive directors, policy experts and other stakeholders.

These meetings have led to the creation of a community agenda for health care reform that reflects the diverse range of interests that are part of One LA’s constituency.  Focus areas include: limiting insurance rate increases; regulating the ability of insurance companies to deny claims; increasing access to Medi-Cal and other public programs for uninsured and low income individuals; and addressing the challenges facing small and medium-sized employers.

DREAM Act Action

09/20/2010

The DREAM Act is likely to come to a vote in the U.S. Senate early this week.  Immanuel has advocated for and will continue to advocate for this important legislation which would have a profound effect on families we know and society at large by creating a path for children of undocumented immigrants to regularize their status and enjoy the full benefits of citizenship.

Click here for an overview of the Act and its history from Wikipedia.

Show your support for the bill by signing a petition sponsored by Christians for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and Soujourners.  Click here.

You may also show your support for the Act by making a call to your Senator’s office.  Our friends at the Korean Resource Center have provided this handy “how-to” video.

A Day in the Fields + Un Día en los Campos 6.12.10

05/25/2010

Saturday, June 12th – A Day in the Fields

Farm workers are people we are connected to each day when we eat and they need our support as consumers in their struggles for justice and dignity. But have you ever met a farm worker and listened to his or her story? Have you walked through the fields and seen the long rows of vines where farm workers labor in the hot summer heat? On Sat., June 12th the National Farm Worker Ministry will be traveling to Bakersfield, CA with a group of supporters from the LA area to get to know more closely a little more of the reality of farm workers in California. We will get the chance to meet with workers from the company of Giumarra Vineyards, where farm workers are currently organizing to improve their conditions after facing years of exploitative labor practices.

We will leave from LA at about 9:00am and return about 6:00pm. Carpool or transportation will be provided for those interested.

Come be a part of this chance to connect with farm workers and learn from them and their struggle!
If you are interested, please contact Christy Lafferty, (323) 893-9605 or clafferty@nfwm.org.

One LA-IAF Action 3.7.10

03/08/2010

On Sunday, leaders from Immanuel participated in a gathering of 450 leaders of One LA, from all over Los Angeles, at Temple Isaiah, to demand improvements in schools.   Superintendent Ray Cortines, School Board members, and a Council Member listened as parents told their stories of wanting help for their children transitioning to middle school, and wanting safe and effective schools. Cortines pledged to increase the length of “Camp Emerson,” which orients children starting middle school, to make sure that bus stops are safe so that there will be no more near accidents when dropping children off, to provide more teacher and parent training, and to make similar improvements throughout LA. Administrators committed to make public schools more effective by creating a culture of collaboration.
